FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FOR BEGINNERS TO INTERMEDIATE COURSE

Frequently Asked Questions

BEGINNERS TO INTERMEDIATE COURSE

Q: I’m a complete beginner. Is this course right for me?
A: Yes. You’ve come to the right place! Most participants have read picture books either to themselves or to their kids, their class or their relatives.  For beginners, that is all the experience required.

Q: What do you mean when you say picture books?
A: This course is all about how to write illustrated books for children aged from approximately two to eight. They’re typically 150 to max 1000 words. For more on picture books read my blog

Q: Do I need to buy anything for the class.
A: Not at all! You will only need a notebook and a pencil or a small sketchbook.

Q: Do I need to have a story idea?
A: No, not for the beginners to intermediate courses. This course will teach you the techniques for writing saleable picture book stories.  You don’t need one at the start, but you will have plenty of picturebook ideas by the end!

Q: Do I need to have illustration skills?
A: Absolutely not. Publishers match stories and texts to an illustrator, so it’s not something you need to worry about. (Of course, if you ARE a good illustrator, this course will help you hone both skills!)

Q: How many others will be in the class?
A: The Illustori Academy online classroom is a supportive learning environment.  We purposefully keep classes small to make everyone more comfortable (no more than approx. 14 per class).

Q: Are they all experienced writers?
A: Not at all. Everyone is here to learn. No experience is necessary for the beginners to Intermediate course, so you don’t have to worry about being out of your depth.

Q: How does the online tutored class work exactly?
A: Typically the last week of every second month, a new beginners-to-intermediate course module will be made available. It is a live class and it will run from Monday to Friday from 7 pm to 9 pm EDT. Through Zoom you can chat with classmates and your online tutor, work on exciting and creative assignments and get feedback.

Q: I’m a busy parent and work full-time. Can I fit this in?
A: Most of our students are busy people just like you. It is a commitment like any other, 10 hours over one week. You will receive lots of helpful backup notes and support from your peers and Adrienne.

Q: I already have some experience in writing or illustrating children’s books, is there a more advanced course?
A: Absolutely! The Follow-On Course is just for you! It also runs once a month. It is a live class and it runs from Monday to Friday 7 pm to 9 pm EDT.  If you have a picture book idea or have written a picture book and feel it is too long, needs work or help with illustrations, or you have already completed one of Adrienne’s courses, either online or in class. If you need to contact me please do not hesitate!
